BUCYRUS – Students at Bucyrus High School are doing their part to help in the fight to end hunger through the Empty Bowls Project.
The High School Art Club, the Bucyrus Concert Choir and the Bucyrus Food Services department will host an event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the High School commons Saturday, March 10.
Community members will be offered the opportunity to help the students raise money that will be donated to help fight hunger. BHS Art Club students have been working to design and make the “empty bowls.” Mrs. Lorie Pennington and her Food Services staff will prepare homemade soup that will be served along with bread, a salad, and a drink.
“Students are asking individuals to donate $10 for a bowl of soup, side of bread and salad, a dessert and a drink while enjoying a great performance by the Bucyrus Concert Choir directed by Ms. Kaitlyn Fourman,” said Michael Striker, Art Club advisor. “Thanks to donations from the Bucyrus Food Service Department, 100 percent of the $10 will be donated to the Bucyrus Backpack Program.”
The empty ceramic bowl that donors will receive symbolizes the hunger that is present in the world and how their donation will help. According to Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, one of every eight Americans struggles daily with food insecurity.
Individuals may also purchase a ticket that includes the Empty Bowls meal with the presentation by the Bucyrus Concert Choir and entrance to the musical James and the Giant Peach. This option is only available for the 7:00 PM production of James and the Giant Peach Saturday March 10.
Tickets for the musical and meal cost $15 for students and $17 for adults. Checks should be made payable to the Bucyrus Drama Department and can be purchased through Ms. Kaitlyn Fourman beginning the week of Feb. 19.
Tickets to the Empty Bowls dinner alone can be purchased through Mr. Michael Striker by calling 419-562-4045 ext.1108. Those making a donation will also get to keep the homemade ceramic bowl (limited to the first 120 tickets purchased) that were made by the students in remembrance of your help with such a great cause.
