MANSFIELD — The suspect in three area bank robberies is now facing federal charges.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Mansfield Police Department announced Friday that Christopher E. McCarthy, 29, has been arrested federally for bank robbery in connection with one of the robberies.
Authorities say McCarthy committed three bank robberies in a span of nine days. McCarthy is believed to have robbed the Ashland Road branch of Richland Bank in Mansfield on April 26, Farmer and Savings Bank in Loudonville on May 4 and Farmers National Bank in Wooster on May 5.
McCarthy was identified as the suspect after the Mansfield robbery and an arrest warrant was issued by Richland County.
On May 5, McCarthy was located and arrested by the Millersburg Police Department.
On Tuesday, May 30, McCarthy was charged federally for the Farmers National Bank robbery which occurred on May 5. Additional federal charges are anticipated for the Richland Bank and the Farmer and Savings Bank that McCarthy is believed to have committed.
“We appreciate our close collaboration between Mansfield officers and our local FBI agents,”Mansfield Police Chief Ken Coontz said in a press release. “This partnership, along with the assistance of our community members, has seen a nearly 90 percent arrest rate on these types of crimes.”
