MANSFIELD — Had it not been for a few brave employees at Dollar General Market, 1193 Park Avenue West, two potential thieves could have escaped with stolen meat.

Police responded to a theft call at the store Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

As patrolwoman Carolyn Young and sergeant Jason Bammann responded, employees from Dollar General tackled and detained the perpetrators, according to Mansfield Police Chief Ken Coontz.

“There wasn’t a fight or anything because there’s no evidence of a struggle,” Coontz said. “But they held them down until the responding officers got there.”

According to the police report, two white males, age 48 and 64, were arrested for theft of meats and other items.

A store employee indicated the location experiences theft on a semi-regular basis.

The employees involved in the incident were sent home. The Assistant Manager of the store was not available for immediate comment on this story.
