Got that new job? Those first few days or weeks can be nerve-wracking, no matter if you are entry-level or a new CEO. It’s tempting to go full steam ahead to make a name for yourself, but that’s not always the best idea. Here’s five ways to stand out as a great new employee, and still be part of the team.

  1. Pay attention to the company culture. Observe closely how employees interact with one another and other cultural highlights. Is there a dress code – even an implied one – to follow? When do co-workers typically take breaks? How often do they socialize after work? How does your boss interact with her team? Is she a top-down leader, or does she run a team-oriented department? Try to observe everything and respect the culture that has been developed, especially if it seems to work.

  1. Be humble. It’s tempting to try to stand out by showing your new co-workers how brilliant you are. Instead, take those first few weeks or months to really buckle down and learn everything you can from anyone who will teach you. Take lots of notes. Ask questions. Be an attentive listener and trainee.

  1. Engage with your co-workers. They aren’t your competition, they are your teammates. Get to know them and allow them to get to know you. Being open to conversation will help you get over those awkward first few days and off to a good start.

  1. Ask for feedback. Make sure you ask your supervisor for her thoughts on how you are doing, especially early on. It shows you are interested in doing a good job and opens the door to constructive conversations. Keep the questions open-ended. “How am I doing?” or “What do I need to improve upon?”.

  1. Hold off on making big changes. This goes for supervisors on down to first-time workers. Take the time to develop a solid understanding of the challenges or problems you might be faced with before jumping into making changes. This will give your decisions credibility and make them more likely to succeed.
