Gary Feagin

MANSFIELD — Gary Feagin realized a longstanding dream Monday night when he was appointed a member of the Mansfield City Schools Board of Education.

“I’m honored to be a part of Mansfield City Schools,” Feagin said. “All my life it has been a dream of mine to be on the school board. It is a great school. I hope I can be a part of making it better.”

Feagin is replacing Dina Davis, who recently resigned “solely for the reason that I can spend more time with my family.”

Davis was elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2013. She served 6½ years on the board, the last 2½ as vice president.

Feagin is no stranger to Mansfiled City Schools. He graduated from Mansfield Senior in 1974. Since then, he has volunteered for the city’s schools, teaching economics through the Junior Achievement program at Mansfield Senior and Hedges Elementary School.

Throughout the 1990s he was an assistant basketball coach for John Simpson Junior High School and at Mansfield Senior he worked as a junior varsity coach. He is a member of the Hall of Fame Committee and worked on passing two tax levies for the district with superintendent Lloyd Martin.

“I will try my very best to make Mansfield City Schools the best it can be and to let kids have the chance to succeed in this global economy,” he said.

Feagin, a State Farm Insurance Agent in Mansfield, said he will attend his first board of education meeting tonight (June 28) at 6 p.m.

“I want to get in and find out problems before I try to fix any of them. I am sure they are there are problems,” Feagin said. “I’m not going to say I’m going to go in and fix problems I am not totally sure are there.”
