MANSFIELD — A series of box cars derailed, one of them emblazoned with a Norfolk and Western Railway stamp, early Saturday evening in Madison Township.

No emergency vehicles were on the scene and it didn’t appear as if anyone was injured. At least six cars were off the tracks just east of the Illinois Avenue overpass at Oak Street. Traffic was not disrupted in the area.

“You know how it is, we’re not allowed to say anything,” said one of six workers at the scene, donning helmets and flourescent tops. “Call Norfolk.”

Train off tracks

There was no answer despite numerous phone calls to various Norfolk and Western Railway contact numbers.

None of the boxcars were overturned but one straddled two tracks. It appeared as though the remaining box cars simply slid off the rails.

There were a number of pickup trucks at the scene as workers calmly milled about the tracks, dodging raindrops and surveying the situation.

A Richland County Sheriff’s dispatcher said no further details were available at the time of publication.
