MANSFIELD – A commercial truck crashed into a rest stop off US 30 eastbound on Friday, closing the rest stop but causing no injuries.

According to trooper Shawn Robles with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 46-year-old Wang Tamah Ong of Indiana simply fell asleep at the wheel.

“He said he had plenty of sleep the night before, but after speaking with him it was determined he fell asleep,” Robles said. “There wasn’t any evasive action taken and no brakes were applied, and the commercial vehicle inspector determined his brakes were working properly.”

Accident path

After exiting US 30 eastbound, Ong’s vehicle collided with a few signs, a bench and a couple vending machines before colliding with the building and coming to a stop, Robles said.

Ong was carrying a commercial load of vegetables, Robles said. He was cited for failure to control and impaired alertness.

The Ohio Department of Transporation is responsible for eventually repairing the rest stop. District 3 Facilities Administrator Dick Feldkamp could not give an estimated cost of damages, but said repairs could take months.

Damage

“We have to order specialty storefront glass, and that could take four to eight weeks,” Feldkamp said.

However, the rest stop itself will be open again by the end of the day. Feldkamp estimated it would be open by 5 p.m.
