DEVELOPING: ASHLAND, Ohio – An armed standoff was reported Thursday night at a residence on Ohio 603 in Ashland, about a half mile from its intersection with U.S. 42, according to Ohio Department of Transportation workers.
ODOT was controlling traffic for several hours, blocking off Ohio 603 at U.S. 42 and U.S. 30, as well as at Crider Road, allowing no one through, including those who live on the state route. One ODOT worker at one point said they had been there for around four hours.
Law enforcement officers were still on scene after midnight.
The standoff reportedly was between a suicidal male and the Ashland Sheriff’s Office, which set up a command center at 1708 Ohio 603.
The suspect was described to be inside a house with a gun.
ODOT workers at the scene confirmed there was a situation but had no further details.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrived on scene around 7:30 p.m. to control traffic before ODOT took over the duty.
Around 9:30 p.m., the Ashland County Bomb Squad, a specialty team of the sheriff’s department, reportedly arrived with a robot.
According to a dispatcher at the Ashland Post of the Ohio State High Patrol, around 11:15 p.m., said radio traffic indicated that a person had come out of the house without a shirt and hands up.
In addition to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Department, the bomb squad, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ashland Police Department was assisting at the scene, as was the Ashland County Special Response Team.
The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office likely is handling the case because the situation was on private property, according to the dispatcher.
No law enforcement officers on scene provided comment to the situation, and no other details were released Thursday night.
