Kingwood Center in Mansfield has long been known for its lush gardens, peacocks and other avian wildlife, as well as its green houses and its historical significance. However, it has invited individuals from the community to participate in its very own 5K for only five years.

The fifth annual Kingwood 5K on Saturday, June 14 is sponsored by OhioHealth MedCentral System and members from the Mansfield Area YMCA Running Club. The proceeds will go toward the maintenance of Kingwood Center. Seasonal grounds worker and Race Director Doug Heestand is excited for the race.

“They [Kingwood] are being very gracious to open up on a Saturday to hold the race. There will also be free admission to the center that day so people can enjoy the gardens before and after the race,” said Heestand. “Lots of family comes out to this each year,” he noted.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. with registration starting at 7:45 a.m. Awards will be presented at approximately 10 a.m. to the male and female winners and will include a photo, plaque, and head wreath made of Kingwood floral. Door prizes will also be given to participants of the race.

Kingwood has a variety of surfaces to run or walk on including roads, wood paths, the bike trail, and some moderate hills. Participants of the race are given the option of running, walking or racing the 5K with Ohio Race Day keeping time.

For more information on how to register for the race, call Kingwood Center at 419-522-0211 or visit their website. Kingwood Center is located on 50 N. Trimble Road in Mansfield.
