“We had 144 participants, which is a huge turnout for the event,” said Diana DeLauder, sister of organizer Bob DeLauder.

Despite unpleasant weather conditions on Saturday morning, runners and walkers were enthusiastic throughout the race. Participants were eager to get the race started. “I have run this 5K three or four times and my best time is 24:44. I’m hoping I place well in my age group,” said runner Amanda Cattey.

A number of runners were participating in the race for the first time. “This is my first 5K that I have ever participated in. I am hoping to go under 40 minutes,” said Courtney Roberts.

There was also a number of returning runners. “I have ran in over 100 5K races. I am looking to have fun with my family today,” said Theresa Roth. Roth’s niece, Alison Roth, competed as well. “I am looking to improve my time and do well today,” said Alison Roth.

The Whippet 5K Run took place during Shelby Bicycle Days, the annual festival in the city. The money that is raised for this event goes towards the Shelby Athletic Boosters and is set aside for the Shelby Cross Country Program. Brian Carson State Farm Insurance and The Shelby Cross Country Program sponsored the event. There was a raffle after the race that included door prizes.

Brent Christy was a participant, too. He ran a time of 17:39. The winner of the Whippet 5K Run was Jason Mueller. Mueller ran a time of 15:33.
