Team Mansfield Liederkranz S.C. took on Polonia S.C. of Cleveland on Sunday afternoon and fell to the northern invaders. The Cleveland team was a formidable opponent with a 6-1 record to Mansfield’s 0-4.
Both teams are Second Division teams in the Lake Erie Soccer League.
Liederkranz made the first goal attempt of the game, but was shut down by the Polonia’s goalie. Taking an aggressive stance, Liederkranz was also yellow-carded early in the first half for ‘failing to respect required distance.”
Physically bigger than their opponent, the Mansfield team struggled to maintain control of the ball. Polonia’s team reigned in speed and passing.
Mansfield Liederkranz maintained tighter control in the second half, but still fell to Cleveland Polonia 3-0.
But playing men’s soccer in Richland County is an achievement in itself, according to Coach Bryan Gladden. The Liederkranz team is the only adult men’s team within 40 miles of Mansfield and athletes ages 16 and up are encouraged to contact Gladden and join the team.
Team members include college ball players and seasoned players. “I’ve been playing soccer for 33 years,” said Craig Shrewsberry. He also coaches and is president of the North Central United State League.
“In real life I’m a social worker at Appleseed Community Mental Health,” he added.
Players can play year-round or seasonally. For players that would like to join the team, Coach Gladden can be reached at 419-512-9225.
