JEROMESVILLE — The vice president of Hillsdale Local Schools’ board of education announced his departure from the board at its meeting Tuesday night.

Nicholas Atterholt, a lawyer in Ashland and the board’s vice president, told his fellow board members he would be moving to the Crestview school district. That means he’s leaving Hillsdale and no longer serving on the board of education.

He told the board they were among the first to be informed of his decision. He added March’s board meeting would likely be his last one.

Kenneth Schuck, who has served with Atterholt since he won election in 2022, said the news surprised him. He added Atterholt will be missed.

Vella King, the board president, agreed with Schuck. She noted she considers him a valuable member of the board.

If an elected board member vacates their seat, the board is supposed to fill that vacancy at its next regular or special meeting, according to the Ohio Revised Code. The vacancy is filled by a majority vote of the board.

King said she doesn’t have details yet about applying to fill Atterholt’s position.

She said the district will likely have an application and interview process. Anyone in the district would be eligible to apply.

Superintendent Catherine Trevathan told Ashland Source Wednesday morning that the district will “very shortly” have a notice of vacancy and application in place.

“[Mr. Atterholt] played a significant role in the district for many years, as well as being a graduate of Hillsdale,” Trevathan wrote in an email message.

“Mr. Atterholt’s knowledge as an attorney helped the Board of Education navigate the legal system throughout his years of service.”
