Stephen “Steve” Brown Eckstein, a beloved member of the Galion community, passed away on February 7, 2024, at the age of 78. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home in Galion.
Born on March 13, 1945, in Bucyrus to the late Robert and Marjorie (Pfleiderer) Eckstein. Steve was a 1963 graduate of Buckeye Central High School. On August 30, 1985, Steve would marry Judy (Pollard) Eckstein, and she would precede him in death on November 4, 2017.
Steve dedicated his life to his work at Just Plastics in Galion, which he owned and operated with his wife Judy for over 30 years. He made lasting connections and garnered a reputation as a hardworking community minded business owner.
Steve was a proud member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he actively participated in weekly bible studies and found a sense of spiritual connection with his church friends.
Known for his adventurous spirit, Steve was a member of the Eagle Squadron RC Club, where he passionately flew remote-controlled airplanes. As a private pilot, he loved the freedom and thrill of aviation.
An avid angler, Steve’s love for fishing knew no bounds. From fishing trips to exotic locations in Hawaii and Alaska, he enjoyed the open waters. Additionally, his affiliation with various organizations such as the VFW Post 4329 of Galion.
Steve’s love for Texas Hold’em, always brought a competitive spirit filled with laughter and friendly competition. Furthermore, his love for country music, especially the timeless melodies of Garth Brooks, resonated deeply within his soul.
Steve’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and profound connections and a family who will forever cherish the memories they shared with their loving father, grandfather, and brother.
Steve leaves behind his loving children, Tina (Keith) Paylor of Crestview, FL., David Whitt of Bucyrus, Theresa (Jan) Waterer of Galion, Danny (Maggie) Whitt of Galion, and Shawn (Jennifer) Whitt of Galion who will forever hold him in their hearts as a pillar of strength, guidance, and unconditional love. Additionally, Steve’s memories will be cherished by his siblings: George (Malorie) Eckstein, and Holly (Phil) Harris; grandchildren: Brittaney (Will) Overbay, Jenna (Josh) Hubbard, Tyler Whitt, Alexis (Clayton) Kendall, Nathaniel Whitt, Mileah Whitt, Elijah Whitt, Blake Whitt, Kirstin Whitt, Kaleigh (Sean) Kirk, and Seth Whitt; 9 great-grandchildren; and special K-9 companion, Buster.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law: Stacy Whitt; brother: David Eckstein and sister-in-law: Marilyn Eckstein.
Friends may call on Sunday, February 11, 2024, from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at Mark A. Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home; 303 Portland Way North, Galion. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024, at 11:00am at the funeral home with Pastor Don Ebert officiating. Burial will follow at Rivercliff Union Cemetery in Mt. Gilead.
