LUCAS — If the Lucas Cubs run to victory on Saturday night, they’ll do so with a whole bunch of honorary Cubs cheering them on.
Few things galvanize a community quite like high school sports, and Richland Source wanted to help the region show its support for Mansfield Senior and Lucas, as each tries to make history with a win to reach the state semifinals.
When we asked you to write a few lines encouraging the teams as they head into the Elite Eight, we were blown away by the response – 147 people took the time to say a kind word for the students facing a huge moment in their athletic careers. If you’re one of those people, we’d like to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Here, we’ve compiled 40 messages for the Lucas Cubs and 42 messages supporting both teams representing Richland County. It’s a testament to the power of positivity a community can bring when it comes together.
The second-seeded Cubs (10-2) will take on No. 1 Cuyahoga Heights (10-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday back at Canal Fulton Northwest High School.
The Cubs reached the regional championship game in 2015 and again last year. Lucas dropped a 21-14 heart-breaker to Glouster Trimble last November. The Tomcats scored the game-winning touchdown in the final minute on the way to a state runner-up finish.
In a sendoff fit for hometown heroes, Cubs football fans will be lining the streets of Lucas as the team departs the high school at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.
