ASHLAND – Reagan Elementary in Ashland City School district took part in Rock Your School, a national movement amongst educators to shake things up within classrooms Sept. 20.
“It was a promise our teachers made to engage and teach our students at the same time,” principal Nicole Brodie said in a news release.
On the same day, over 30,000 educators from more than 20 different countries decided to do something different in their classrooms to excite over 1 million students and motivate them to keep learning.
Reagan Elementary students began the day singing their school song, led by Addicted 2 Learning (Jim Visintine, Dorene Johnson, Janie Zeger, Molly LaRue, and Tina Anderson) and a concert led by Josh Vanderzyden.
The excitement continued into the classroom as students explored a Rock Tour that led to a secret word, Rock and Roll learning activities that students could use to unlock the guitar case and even exploring rocks in the pre-historic area to discover dinosaurs.
Teacher BreAnn Fennel created this poem about Rock Your School Day:
“‘Twas the night before rock your school and all through the school,
not a person was stirring, but I’m sitting on my stool.
The banners were hung by the ceiling with care
in hopes that the students would soon be there!
The students were nestled all snug in their beds
while teacher’s ideas swarmed around in their heads.
Principal in her pirate ship and I in my class
had just sent out the flyers for a day of pizzazz.
When the sun came up we knew we would matter,
the kids had arrived and they started to scatter.
Away to their classes they flew like a flash,
they couldn’t wait to learn a game like math dash!
The smiles on their faces like joy in the snow,
gave a luster of education to all in the row!
When what to the wondering eyes did appear,
but their teachers all lined up in Rocker gear!
With the nation all celebrating so lively and cool,
we knew i a moment it must be ROCK YOUR SCHOOL!
